One of my favorite things to eat when I got home to my grandmother’s house after school was Rice Krispies Treats and Tang. Its a very signature childhood taste. There was even a Simpsons episode where Marge emerges with a tray of Rice Krispies Treats and Tang just as one of the Lisa’s friends is discussing the fact that her mom is always walking in with them. My grandmother was notorious for doing the same thing. But I loved the stuff!
Tang was created as a breakfast drink, a substitute for orange juice originally, but it wasn’t very popular. But then John Glenn, famous astronaut, used it on one of his trips to space, it became wildly popular. Remember astronaut ice cream? The stuff was terrible, but I always wanted my mom to spend the $5 to get me a pack at the mall. Tang, however, I actually liked. It’s so difficult to find anymore though as very few stores carry it, at least where I live. You can find Tang on Amazon here: http://amzn.to/29wwGwU Another option is the Orange Koolaid at Amazon here: http://amzn.to/29pA3ri. Its not the same flavor, but its close.
So I got some, and then made it into a milkshake, obviously. I can’t tell you how good this is, you just have to experience it for yourself. Its a little like a dreamsicle with an extra yummy touch.
RICE KRISPIES TREATS AND TANG MILKSHAKE
You will need:
- Rice Krispies Treats (I just followed the directions on the back of the box)
- 1 scoop of Tang or 1 packet of Tang (alternatively, one packet of orange Koolaid will work)
- 4 cups of ice cream
- 1 cup of milk
Make your Rice Krispies Treats first and cut into squares after they’ve set up. Set aside. Then take your Tang, ice cream and milk and blend with your immersion mixer. Pour into 2 large glasses or four smaller ones. Crumble up a few pieces of Rice Krispies Treats and stir. Then grab a couple of squares of the treats and top your drink with them. Add a few marshmallows for garnish, and start sipping!
